Help Logan Crookston Heal — Surgery in Barcelona

Logan should be serving a mission in Peru. Instead, he is fighting daily neurological pain that began with a single unexpected blow to the head. In September 2025, while serving as a missionary in Peru, Logan was struck across the head by an intoxicated man while contacting in public. At first, it appeared to be a concussion, but after days of worsening symptoms and sleeping nearly 16–20 hours a day, he was hospitalized. An MRI revealed a brain bleed. He spent several days alone in a hospital in a foreign country, undergoing testing and observation. He was eventually flown home to recover, with hopes of returning to serve. Although we believed time would heal this, the headaches and other symptoms have intensified.

What We’ve Learned Since

Advanced imaging in the U.S. has revealed that Logan has:
• Chiari I malformation
• Unexpected disc degeneration
• Scoliosis
• Congenital fusion of C4–C5 vertebrae

In simple terms, the base part of Logan’s brain sits lower than it should, placing pressure on his brainstem and spinal cord.

His symptoms now include:
• Severe, frequent headaches
• Light and sound sensitivity
• Neck pain and limited mobility
• Neurological episodes that disrupt daily life

The concussion did not “cause” this — but it appears to have unmasked or aggravated an underlying structural condition. Logan is 19. He should be working, serving, learning, and laughing with friends. Instead, some days he struggles simply to function.

Why Barcelona?

After months of research and consultation, we were evaluated by the Institut Chiari & Siringomielia & Escoliosis de Barcelona. Their team specializes in treating complex cranio-vertebral conditions using a minimally invasive procedure called sectioning of the filum terminale. In the U.S, the typical surgery performed is very invasive and consists of removing part of the skull to make room for the low lying part of Logan’s brain. The newer technique performed in Spain, Italy and China is minimally invasive and addresses abnormal tension on the spinal cord that may be contributing to Logan’s condition. The clinic has identified Logan as a candidate for this surgery, scheduled for March. Insurance does not cover this procedure overseas.

The Financial Goal

We are setting a goal of $34,000, similar to what others in our community have needed for this surgery.

Projected expenses:
• Surgery & hospital fees — $23,000
• Flights (Logan + parents) — $4,000
• Lodging for recovery (10–14 days) — $4,000
• Post-operative medications & follow-ups — $3,000

Total: $34,000

Why a GoFundMe?

Many friends and family have asked how they can help. A GoFundMe allows people to participate in Logan’s healing. It also significantly reduces the financial stress surrounding an already overwhelming medical situation, allowing his parents to focus entirely on Logan’s recovery.

A Final Ask

This surgery represents hope — hope that Logan can return to full strength, hope that he can serve again, work again, live without constant neurological pain. If you know Logan, you know his heart. He has always shown up for others. Now we are asking for help showing up for him.

Please donate if you can.
Please share if you’re willing.
Please pray if you believe.
Let’s help Logan get his life back.
