Hi Friends,
On December 16th, Super Typhoon Rai (also known as Odette according the the Filipino naming system) ravaged the Philippines. The Philippines on average gets hit with 20 typhoons a year, typically between July and October. Rai was the most powerful to hit in 2021 and is comparable to a category 5 hurricane. One of the worst hit areas is Bohol, a province located in the country’s Visayan region and known for its coral reefs and tourism.
As of today 12/19 the superstorm has taken 142 lives with more than half of them coming from the Bohol Province. The whole island is without power and no running water. Sadly the toll is growing by the day and many people are still missing.
Just after Thanksgiving our retired parents returned to the Philippines to move into their new home. Our mother has finally made contact with us today to confirm they are safe but their hometown Loboc is devastated by the storm. She told us the river which runs through the surrounding area has flooded. Homes are underwater. Rice fields and fish farms that are the only source of income for many people are destroyed. Many families have lost everything. People are starving and have no access to drinking water.
Our mother is working on the ground to help distribute food and supplies. The funds we are raising will go to immediate purchases of food and fresh water that will be distributed to individual families in need. We understand these are trying times for all of us but even a donation of $1 would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
The Andoy Sisters
