On April 21, 2014, my life changed forever when I was hit by a pickup truck while riding my bicycle. The accident left me with severe injuries to my left leg and foot, as well as a traumatic brain injury and PTSD. In 2015, I was fitted with an Exosym exoskeleton prosthetic with a knee section, which gave me back my mobility and allowed me to live without constant pain. For years, this device has been my lifeline, helping me regain independence and even return to cycling, a passion I thought I had lost.
Over time, my foot has changed significantly, and my Exosym is now 11 years old and worn out. I’ve developed blisters, corns, nerve pain, and swelling, and it’s becoming harder to walk as the device no longer fits properly. My doctors have told me it’s time for a new Exosym, but the cost is more than I can manage on my own. Without a new device, I risk further injury and even the possibility of losing my foot. This is especially urgent because I am working hard to compete in cycling again, something that brings me purpose and joy after everything I’ve been through.
I also have a 7-year-old autistic son with high support needs. My Exosym allows me to care for him and keep him safe, especially in public places where he is at risk of elopement. Without a properly fitting device, I would need assistance to care for him, which would impact both of our lives. Your support will help me get the new Exosym I need to stay active, care for my son, and continue pursuing my love of cycling. Thank you for reading and for any help you can give.
