On Friday 23rd Jan at around 5:10pm Liz was severely injured in a hit and run accident on her commute home from work. After 6 weeks and 2 surgeries she has finally at left the hospital but that's where the rehab work begins.

There is a police investigation to find the driver but until then insurance won't pay out and could take years. Although Liz has come home after 6 weeks in hospital and rehab she is still only able to access the ground floor of the house meaning no access to a bathroom or toilet. Myself and friends have also had to reorganise the ground floor to be able to fit a single bed and allow Liz room to move with mobility aids.

About Liz,

Liz is an active person enjoying cycling and walking and has completed multiple sponsored walking challenges. She is a keen football fan (Play Up Pompey!) at both national and club level and will watch just about any sport on from darts and snooker to boxing and F1 and just about everything else. Liz spent years dreaming of being a PE teacher due to her love for sport and activity and a desire to share that love with the future generations.

About the injury

'Thankfully' the only major damage was to Liz's leg but, it was broken in multiple places

The main injury is a comminuted tibia plateau fracture (top of the shin bone broken in multiple places, crushing the surface of the knee joint)

Liz also broke the tibia further down the leg as well as a bone in her ankle.

The first surgery Liz had was to fit a Ilizarov frame (leg scaffolding) to help stabilise the leg. The second was to add more pins and plates to hold the bone together, as well as adding a device to help lengthen the bone due to bone being lost in the breaks.

Due the the severity of the injury and the recovery time it is unclear when Liz will be able to go back to work. The house we currently live in may need drastic adaptations or we may need to move. Without the money from insurance and the loss of income it is uncertain if we will be able to cover bills and mortgage payments so may need to move anyway.

This money will help us be able to stay in our home. It will help ease financial worries so that focus can be on recovery. It will help Liz get back to a position where she can do the simple things she loves - go to work, watch football, go for a walk.
