Hi everyone. For those who know me, you know I don’t like asking for help. I also feel like I hardly have the right to ask, given the state of the economy and everything going on in the world right now. But this situation has been terrifying and everything happened so quickly.

Our little 17-month-old Juju went from being his normal energetic self to suddenly becoming extremely sick. He began vomiting repeatedly and became very weak, so we rushed him to the vet for an emergency evaluation and initial treatment.

When his condition didn’t improve, he required a follow-up visit and IV fluids to help stabilize him and treat the dehydration caused by his illness.

After these evaluations and treatments, Juju was diagnosed with Acute Hemorrhagic Diarrhea Syndrome (AHDS) (formerly Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis [HGE]): a severe form of gastroenteritis that can cause rapid dehydration and intestinal inflammation, especially in small dogs. AHDS can progress very quickly in small dogs, which is why fast treatment and close monitoring are critical.

For a short time it seemed like the second treatment might be helping, but Juju relapsed, with the vomiting returning and his condition worsening again. Because of that, we had to take him to the emergency vet for urgent evaluation and additional treatment.

Doctors examined him for signs of abdominal distress or other serious complications. While no immediate life-threatening complications were found, he is still dealing with severe nausea, stomach irritation, and weakness, and requires continued medication and monitoring while his stomach and intestines heal.

Dogs can recover from AHDS, but it often requires multiple vet visits, medications, and supportive care to keep them hydrated and stable during recovery.

Seeing him this sick has been heartbreaking. He’s such a sweet little dog and a huge part of our family. We’re doing everything we can to help him recover, but the cost of multiple vet visits, emergency care, hospitalization, and treatment is adding up quickly.
