URGENT UPDATE ON LITTLE BEAR

Today has been absolutely devastating.

Little Bear came home from boarding in horrible shape. His feet were so badly infected and swollen that they looked worse than the day I originally picked him up from the shelter, when euthanasia was being considered because of how severe the swelling in his feet was.

He also did not look well overall, and then this morning, he took a major turn for the worse. He could not stand. He could not walk. He would not eat, and he would not drink water.

I immediately got him to the vet, and unfortunately, we learned that this has escalated into something even more serious. There is concern that the severe infection in his feet may have spread beyond his feet, and imaging also showed foreign material in his intestines.

His condition is serious enough that he now requires hospitalization and intensive medical care.

Right now, the priority is getting him stable. Once he is stable enough, the doctors will need to repeat imaging, continue evaluating the infection and the foreign material in his intestines, and determine whether surgery will be necessary and what additional treatment he will need.

He is nowhere close to being okay or out of the woods.

Today alone, I had to pay approximately $7,000 upfront, and that is only the low-end estimate for his current hospitalization and treatment. The higher estimate is already approaching $10,000, and that does not include what may come next if he needs additional hospitalization, surgery, more diagnostics, medications, follow-up care, or continued treatment for the infection.

Little Bear was also supposed to begin his heartworm treatment this week — something we have been preparing for for months — but because he is now so medically unstable, that treatment has had to be postponed.

I have been financially and medically responsible for Little Bear’s care, and I will continue doing absolutely everything possible for him.

But we desperately need help.

These veterinary bills have to be paid upfront in order for him to receive treatment, and the costs are adding up incredibly quickly. Every donation, no matter the amount, helps keep his care going.
