Lisa Goldsmith, Master's Record Holder of Imogene Run and Pikes Peak Ascent, broke her femur skate skiing this morning (1/26/2022), and underwent a three-hour surgery at Boulder Community Hospital.
There was a huge amount of displacement in the break (see the attached radiograph). It was pretty lucky it didn't compromise an artery. She wasn't complaining about her knee, though I imagine that will get evaluated down the line. And yes: it was very painful. Pretty sure any femur break is, but with that much displacement, it's no wonder ski patrol had to give her a pain med IV right there in the snow before putting her in the litter.
It happened coming down a short, steep slope when she broke through a thin layer of groomed snow into a spongy deeper layer of ungroomed snow. This is what caused the crash. Luckily, she was with her friend Grace, who stayed with her while someone else went to get ski patrol.
Lisa is a massage therapist and will be off her feet for at least 6 weeks (maybe 8 weeks) of work. That, coupled with the cost of surgery (she has healthcare, but the
out-of-pocket cost is ~$10K) and rehabilitation, will put a great financial strain on her and her husband Roy. Let's chip in and help out this wonderful person.
