Hi, Friends. As most of you know, our favorite friend, colleague, dog mom, amazing wife and daughter, Lindsey Gresham, is battling the autoimmune disease, Transverse Myelitis.
Transverse myelitis is an inflammation of the spinal cord, the part of the central nervous system that sends impulses from the brain to nerves in the body. The spinal cord also carries sensory information back to the brain. Symptoms may develop suddenly (over a period of hours) or over days or weeks and include:
pain
sensory problems
weakness in the legs and possibly arms, and
bladder and bowel problems.
Transverse myelitis can affect people of any age, gender, or race. It does not appear to be genetic or run in families. The disorder typically occurs between ages 10 and 19 years and 30 and 39 years.
Although some people recover from transverse myelitis with minor or no residual problems, the healing process may take months to years. Most people with transverse myelitis have at least partial recovery, with most recovery taking place within the first 3 months after the attack. Others may suffer permanent impairments that affect their ability to perform ordinary tasks of daily living. Some individuals will have only one episode of transverse myelitis; other individuals may have a recurrence, especially if an underlying illness caused the disorder. There is no cure for transverse myelitis, but there are treatments to prevent or minimize permanent neurological deficits.
Since December 8th, Lindsey has been unable to work. She has been wheel-chair bound at times, but has also made huge progress with her walker. She has a catheter and a laundry list of medications that she is taking. Unfortunately, she's been having to fight with her insurance company to pay for critical PET scans and other medical necessities. Lindsey spent over 2 weeks at Memorial Hospital and was told by a Specialist with 28 years experience that he has never seen a case like hers; He referred her to the Cleveland Clinic and Lindsey is currently working with them and their recommendations.
So many of you have reached out to help and it means more than you will ever know to Lindsey. At a time like this, with being out of work, not on disability and no certainty of returning to work, I feel like starting this GoFundMe account could be the best way to help out our girl out. As we all know, mortgages, utilities and all of life's obligations don't hault when we're ill.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. I will update as Lindsey continues with this journey. She is still the strongest, funniest, sweetest woman in the world- she's fighting this with all she's got!
