Linda Stiers is a 72-year old woman who lives alone in the condo unit next to ours. Her last remaining family member, her mother, passed away two years ago and since then Linda has been entirely alone, keeping mostly to herself. In October 2024 she fell outside our condo and broke her hip and right wrist. We helped her with an ambulance and offered to care for her cat while she was in the hospital.

While she was away, we discovered that Linda's situation was far worse than we'd recognized. It seems the loss of her mother (a deeply traumatic story we won't recount here) led to a long period of depression, isolation, and self-neglect. A leak in her water heater, along with multiple burst pipes, has led to significant damage to the floors. In preparation to replace the hot water heater, it was discovered that the lower level of the unit has suffered significant water damage. As it stands, the unit needs to be gutted and renovated before Linda will be able to return to her home.

Linda is on a fixed income with Social Security and has little savings. She has no family to lean on and no support system. She has been staying at an extended stay hotel for the past few weeks, and this is eating up what little income she has. The cost to renovate her unit will run into the tens of thousands of dollars - money Linda simply does not have. Linda is desperate to save her home, but it's unclear whether it will be financially possible to do so.
