On April 13, 2025, my mother, Linda Espino, went out to help someone she knew and worked with. That act of kindness ended in unfathomable violence.
She was shot multiple times and left with life-threatening injuries that required emergency surgeries and over a month in the ICU and Trauma Units. She very nearly didn’t make it.
But, she survived.
Today, she’s home. She’s alive and facing a really tough fight. She’s relearning how to move. Rebuilding her strength. Trying to regain independence. Her courage makes all of her children and grandchildren so proud. But the road ahead is steep. And it’s really costly.
The financial toll of this tragedy has been overwhelming. My mom’s hospital bills alone have already exceeded $1.3 million, and that doesn’t include the ongoing costs of trauma recovery and medical care, occupational therapy and rehabilitation, legal expenses related to the attack, lost income due to long-term disability, or the out-of-pocket burden of caregiving, transportation, and adaptive housing.
We’re doing everything we can. We are not asking for help without giving it ourselves, as well. But insurance and disability benefits will only cover so much. And as much as it pains us to ask, we know that we can’t do this alone.
We’re raising funds to help my mom focus on healing and not survival. EVERY SINGLE DOLLAR goes directly toward her care and recovery.
If you can give, no matter the amount, it makes a difference.
If you can’t donate right now, please share this page with your network. You never know who might be able to help.
Please show my mom that she’s not alone. That kindness still exists in this world.
From our entire family, thank you for helping us..
With deep gratitude,
Vanessa Gonzalez-Anello (Linda’s daughter)
