Help Lina Recover from Stroke

From Lina's Husband:

Dear All,

On November 9th, Lina had a stroke caused by bleeding on the brain. Thank God, I was with her for I had just returned home 20 minutes before, and was across the hallway when she fell. I immediately called 999 ( we are in the UK) and within 15 or so minutes she was being attended by paramedics and was taken to King College Hospital A&E.  Lina was a healthy and active, stay at home mom to our 3 lovely children.  She has history of high blood pressure,  but was managing her levels, with diet weight training, yoga and other exercises. In fact she was doing her daily training just before her fall.

Things got REALLY SERIOUS when the doctors discovered a 2nd bleed in the brain some 4 days later which required immediate surgery.  Post op things finally looked to be getting better, Lina was finally recovering mentally, and her blood pressure had been controlled. Unfortunately, the stroke resulted in right-sided hemiplegia; paralysis on the right side of her body.

For weeks in the hospital ward, not much was done for Lina in terms of rehab.  She was eventually transferred to a local rehabilitation centre in where we were promised INTENSIVE rehab which they did not provide.  Physios had been visiting her, maybe one session a day, performing minute treatment but certainly not to the extent we expected or were promised.  Due to the holidays and being understaffed, they insisted Lina wait 3 MORE WEEKS, taking us into the new year,  to start  ACTUAL intensive rehab.  This was unbearable news especially since Lina was determined to get started on her recovery as soon as possible.  To make matters worse, her hopes were often crushed when she was reminded several times by staff that her chances of making a full recovery were unlikely.

This has seriously broken my trust in the rehab centre and their ability to help Lina. They had also forecast a 3 month stay from the start of her arrival, with the added 2 weeks over Christmas,  that takes us to the end of March.  Lina was devastated at the thought of spending 3 months away from her family.  Our only other option was to take her home, and pay for an at-home Physiotherapist to work with her.

Lina had not seen our children in 7 weeks due to Covid restrictions (Tier 4).  This broke Lina's heart daily but she was finally granted a visit on Christmas day. It was difficult for the children to see their once vibrant and strong mother confined to a wheelchair and immobile.

This brings us to our FINAL STRAW! While waiting for 7 weeks by this point for the rehabilitation to finally begin, on New Year's Eve we got word she tested positive for Covid19, but without any symptoms. With very little warning, she was admitted to a Covid ICU ward in another hospital sharing a room with several other Covid patients with severe symptoms.  This concerned me greatly so I rushed to the hospital early on New Years Day to get her discharged and finally bring her home as it was very clear she had been through ENOUGH. We will self isolate at home as a family, and give Lina the most important aid in recovery, a loving home and family.  Consequently, bringing her home has resulted in her losing her bed at the rehab centre.  This was a difficult outcome to accept. Rehabilitation may be slower at home (maybe not!) but from our experience since 9th November with them,  it cannot be worse than what she had received up until now.

Lina is on a mental roller coaster, and I see her resolve in her current situation strong, but her emotions understandably had been dire at times. Her body has shown some signs of improvement but we MUST begin some serious work NOW to get things better for her FULL recovery.   We need funds ASAP to properly equip the home for her recovery and hire a physiotherapist to make regular visits. We will also need to supplement my lost income and provide for our children and household expenses. My filming work had to be completely cancelled due to self isolation with Lina.  During this entire ordeal I was working ONLY night shifts at Sky News so that I could be there for the kids during the day so we lost quite a bit of income the last 2 months.

I want to continue to work all the night shifts I can get, but I fear that won't be possible as Lina needs my assistance with daily care.  We only have one bathroom on the 2nd floor so she will need daily assistance managing the stairs and washing up etc.

I would like to be available for Lina for at least the next 3 months.

Monthly lost income : Approx £5000

Cost of at-home physio: £85/45 mins (will need daily visits Mon-Fri sometimes double sessions) - £1700/month

Cost of at-home equipment: Approx £5000

Any assistance for us would be so greatly appreciated. Please pray for Lina's full recovery and God bless you all!
