Lillian, my honorary niece, welcomed her baby Dallas into the world on Valentine’s Day under incredibly difficult circumstances. Dallas was born at 36 weeks via an emergency c-section after doctors discovered hydrocephalus. After birth, a CT scan revealed bleeding in Dallas’s brain, a left shift from midline, and areas where brain tissue had died, been reabsorbed, and replaced with fluid. This has been a traumatic and emotional time for both Lillian and Dallas as they navigate the uncertainty of these medical challenges.

Just a month before Dallas’s birth, Lillian lost her job. She has been struggling to cover basic living expenses like rent and utilities, and now faces the added burden of traveling to and from the hospital to be with Dallas and deliver her expressed milk. Without a car, transportation costs have become overwhelming, and she also needs supplies to continue providing milk for her baby in the NICU. The stress of these financial challenges is making an already difficult situation even harder for Lillian as she tries to be there for Dallas every step of the way.
