Help Lilah Recover from Post-Spay Complications
Donation protected
Edit #2 infectious disease panel came back negative. Something still isn’t right. We have an appointment Monday with a regular vet to try to get some answers
Edit: Lilah was sent home from the hospital on 3 antibiotics and a diagnosis of “fever of unknown origin”. Tests are pending
Thank you for the love and support.
We took Lilah 2 weeks ago to get spayed. The Humane Society gave us a free voucher to use at Fix a Friend when we adopted her. We also got Reese spayed there with no issues, so we didn’t think anything of it.
Five days after being spayed, she started acting lethargic and not quite herself. Up until this point, she has been a healthy and happy 10-month-old puppy, which I have the vet records to prove. I took her to the emergency vet where they said she was running a 106-degree fever. They wanted to admit her, but I didn’t have $4,000 to drop without any notice and only had about $1,200 on my CareCredit at the time. They sent me home with some antibiotics and cough medicine and said they suspected it was pneumonia caused by possible complications of the spay.
I emailed Fix a Friend the next day to update them on her condition and for advice and got no response.
Last night (2 weeks since the spay and 1 week since our last visit to the emergency vet), Lilah still wasn’t doing great and honestly seemed worse than she had so far. She would barely lift her head, and I really thought she wasn’t going to make it through the night. We took her back to the emergency vet where they said her 106-degree fever had returned, and they again recommended that she be admitted to find the source of this infection. After much consideration, I decided this was probably the best move since I tried the deal with it myself at home method already and that didn’t work.
I have spent over $5,000, and the financial hardship and the lack of support from Fix a Friend has been so disheartening. Not to mention, when I looked through others' reviews of them, there were quite a few other people whose pets have gotten sick or even died from the same type of issues (one of them being 3 weeks ago where one of their animals passed away). I understand complications can happen, but no follow-up or checking in after I reached out for guidance just doesn’t sit right with me.
All I wanted to do was be a responsible pet owner and take care of my baby, and the fact that all this has happened and she’s still not okay is so heartbreaking. Especially when this was supposed to be a routine procedure.
