Help Light Up the Cranky Cabaret!

The Cranky Cabaret, which has been showcasing young up-and-coming musical theater performers in a fun, non-exploitative, non "pay-to-sing" kinda way for almost 5 years is moving! And now we need your help to keep doing it. After Joria Studios, (our home for 4 years and 9 months!) closed its doors on January 1st, for the last few months we've been a show without a permanent home. That, however, is about to change! Trinity Lutheran Church of Manhattan will be our new, totally amazing location. Located on the Upper West Side, a scant 5 minute walk from the 96th Street stop on the 1,2, and 3 trains, Trinity boasts a gorgeous playing space, stunning-beyond-belief acoustics, and ample room for literally hundreds of audience members. The only thing we don't have is....LIGHTS!
Stage lighting, of course is never cheap, but we're developing a relatively low cost versatile set of options that will not break the bank but will continue to make our performers look absolutely fabulous! It will include a spotlight, as well as some side lighting trees complete with a variety of colors, and of course, cables, gels, dimmer packs and a control board. The total cost of a fully realized lighting package will run us just under $1800.
This partnership with Trinity Lutheran of Manhattan is not just a "marriage of convenience". This is a partnership of which the Cranky Team is extremely proud. Trinity Church has been a leader of the religious left, with a shelter for homeless LGBT youth and a history of fighting for better pay and working conditions for undocumented immigrants on the UWS. This is an organization New York needs now more than ever before. And just as we need a space to continue giving young performers a wonderful venue to experiment in a way that allows them to take risks in a safe, loving, and supportive atmosphere, this church needs the revenue we provide so they can continue protecting and serving those in our society who are often the most vulnerable. Creating a stronger performance environment leads to a better long-term partnership with this space and so ultimately you are helping nurture a church that is doing exceptional work in our community, as well as the Cranky Cabaret. Its an absolute win-win for everyone!
