My sweet friend Lori has been facing a mother's worst nightmare.
Lori's son, Mike Corbin, is a 33-year-old Army veteran. After faithfully serving our country for years, he returned home to pursue his career in the restaurant industry. He came back with his dreams and aspirations strong and intact, and he set his sights on making them real. He also came back with the spectre of PTSD and depression lingering in the shadows of his determination, a potential battle to be fought every day, out of uniform, but with the same determination that he chased his dreams. Mike kept a finger on the pulse of his mental health and tended to it respectfully, mindful of its presence but not dictated by it.
Until the hits started coming. Mike loved his job. But there was no room for upward growth, and Mike was not willing to settle. He wanted growth, he sought challenges and advancement. He left that position, on great terms with management, who wished him success in his future endeavors. He accepted what seemed to be an ideal position, but learned very soon that they promised more than they intended to give. So Mike soldiered on, and found a new place to continue his climb. Until they, too, let him down, abruptly severing his employment without even the courtesy of a face to face conversation. They let him go in a voice mail, an unexpected turn that opened a door of darkness in Mike's mind.
Worried about his finances, and stymied in his attempts to move up in his chosen industry, Mike's hopes and confidence were eroded by the loss of income and security. The erosion left holes where the PTSD and depression found their way in, and once inside, they took control. Three nights ago, Mike made an attempt to take his own life. And very nearly succeeded.
Lori went to her son immediately. Once she arrived at the hospital, she realized that the demons in his darkness are still too close, and all too real. Mike has an intense road to recovery ahead of him, both mentally and materially. He will be focusing on getting well at first, the most important thing of all. It will require all of his energy and commitment. This is where he needs our help now the most. Mike needs a financial cushion to alleviate the worries about his rent, utilities, and groceries for the next two months or so. Mike will fight his battle with both hands and his whole heart. Please help us to help him, and to light his way back to health and wholeness again.
