My brother survived the crash — now he needs our help to heal.

On Sunday, my brother Charlie’s world was turned upside down. While riding his moped in South Carolina, he was struck by a car that turned directly in front of him. The force of the collision was so powerful that it launched him onto the windshield, leaving him with a shattered kneecap, a broken femur, multiple broken and chipped teeth, a concussion, and several other deep wounds that required extensive stitches.

Charlie was rushed to the hospital by ambulance and underwent emergency surgery that very night. The surgeons cleaned and debrided his open leg wound, placing rods and pins to stabilize him. Doctors continue to monitor his leg for any signs of infection while he awaits a second surgery to reconstruct his kneecap, smooth the joint, and place permanent pins. His recovery will be long and painful, and more surgeries may be required in the months ahead.

The doctors have told us that Charlie’s leg will be non-weight-bearing for at least 8 weeks. During this time, he will endure grueling physical therapy, and though his surgeon believes he will walk again, Charlie will likely live with pain in his knee for the rest of his life. When our mom asked the surgeon about the possibility of a knee replacement, he simply shook his head and said: “Charlie is lucky to be alive.”

And yet, in the midst of this nightmare, Charlie’s spirit is what moves us most. My brother is a recovering addict who has been working tirelessly to stay sober, living in an inpatient rehabilitation facility and finally finding his footing after so many battles. He was actually on his way back to his apartment within the facility when he was struck. Charlie was proud of his progress—of the life he was finally starting to build for himself. He was on the right path and staying sober for himself and for his children. And then, just as he chose the right path, life knocked him down again.

Because Charlie was employed doing physical labor, this accident has taken away not just his health but also his income. He cannot pay his weekly rent at the rehab facility that has become his safe place, nor can he afford basic necessities like food. Insurance should cover his medical bills and his moped, but not the simple, everyday things that give him stability—the very things that could make the difference between hope and despair.

That is why we are asking for help. Funds raised will go toward:

-Covering Charlie’s rent at his inpatient rehab facility so he doesn’t lose his place during recovery

-Food and daily necessities he cannot physically or financially manage right now

-Extensive physical therapy and long-term rehabilitation needs not fully covered by insurance

-Dental treatment to repair the teeth shattered in the crash

Charlie has been kicked down so many times in life, but he has always gotten back up. This time, he needs a hand to help him stand again.
