Let Bunnies Fly: Give Rabbits a Seat Under the Seat
Help us become an official nonprofit and keep families together.
Why This Matters
At Let Bunnies Fly, we believe families belong together. Not just when it is convenient, but especially when it is not.
Cargo travel is not the real problem. It is a symptom of a bigger one: airlines that still treat rabbits as freight rather than family, and a policy gap that forces guardians to make decisions no family should have to make.
- We have watched families turn down a graduate program, a new job, or the chance to be at a sick parent's bedside because there was no safe way to bring their rabbit with them.
- We have watched guardians surrender a rabbit they loved rather than risk a cargo hold that could harm or kill the rabbit. We have watched children with autism, for whom a companion rabbit is not a pet but a source of real comfort and stability, be denied the chance to travel with that same rabbit.
- And for families who took the cargo risk anyway, the outcome has not always been the one they hoped for. Rosie made it through her manifest cargo flight with Air Canada, but was denied appropriate food and hydration along the way and passed away shortly after landing. No family should ever have to make that choice in the first place.
These are just a few of the stories we have heard. We hear more of them every week from families trying to figure out their options, and most of those stories never make it into a headline or a campaign post.
This is not really about pet policy. It is about whether a family gets to stay together when it matters most, during a move, a deployment, a rescue, a medical crisis, or simply a life that does not pause to ask permission.
Rabbits are the third most popular companion animal in the United States and Europe. Veterinary science is clear that in-cabin travel is the only safe way for a rabbit to fly. Cargo holds expose them to stress, temperature swings, and respiratory risk. Rabbits used to be widely accepted as in-cabin companions. Today, only a handful of airlines still allow it, and most families are left with cargo, a private charter costing thousands of dollars, or leaving their rabbit behind.
We believe there is a better option, and we are done waiting for someone else to build it.
Proof This Works, Even Before We Were Funded
We did not wait for funding to start changing outcomes. This year alone, with an all-volunteer team and no marketing budget:
Alaska Airlines reinstated in-cabin rabbit travel after our direct advocacy.
Hawaiian Airlines allowed intra-island cabin travel for rabbits & outbound flights to the lower 48. This August, Alaska and Hawaiian Airlines confirmed in-cabin rabbit travel into Honolulu for the first time ever.
Three active petitions, targeting JetBlue, ITA Airways, and Air Canada, have gathered thousands of signatures across multiple countries and languages.
A military family's story reached 280,000 people and was pitched to a national news outlet.
We built working partnerships with Fly Together and the Rabbit Org Foundation, two organizations already doing this work on the ground, so families we help are backed by a real coalition, not just one campaign.
We accomplished all of this before we were even a registered nonprofit. Imagine what we can do once we are fully funded, staffed, and able to run this work at the pace families actually need.
Who's Behind the Let Bunnies Fly Team
Our volunteer-led board has made a substantial impact, altering two airline policies without using a marketing budget, PR firm, or paid staff. Our founder leads our mission and manages every airline relationship, while our communications team has shared numerous family stories with hundreds of thousands, gaining the attention of Alaska Airlines' leadership.
Additionally, our team includes experts in finance and animal healthcare who have collaborated with legal, risk, and compliance teams to ensure transparency and detailed reporting for all donations.
Since our inception, our team has worked closely with aviation and veterinary experts, including a veterinarian from the House Rabbit Society and another with airline industry background, to provide clinical evidence when airlines are hesitant to adopt change.
In addition to our board, we collaborate with organizations such as Fly Together and the Rabbit Org Foundation, which helps us expand our influence through their networks and expertise. We are also finalizing our nonprofit status with a Massachusetts attorney and will soon add two new board members: a veterinarian and an expert in legal or aviation fields, enhancing our ability to advocate and drive change.
We did all of this as volunteers. Imagine what we do with the resources this round provides.
What We're Raising For
We are becoming an official 501(c)(3) nonprofit so this work can grow past what a volunteer board can carry alone. This fundraiser covers two things.
Getting officially recognized. State filing fees, our nonprofit attorney, and the insurance that protects our all-volunteer board while they do this work. Roughly $10,400.
Launching our next chapter. Finding the next Wasabi, the next Asa, before their story disappears into a group chat instead of reaching the airline that needs to hear it.
Telling that story well enough that it cannot be ignored, and getting it in front of the person who can actually say yes. That takes real production, a trained voice ready for press, and the basic tools our team needs to run this against five airlines at once instead of one at a time. Roughly $7,800.
Total goal: approximately $18,000.
This is also the foundation that lets us build toward the next stage of this work, including direct assistance for families facing an urgent situation with no safe travel option. We cannot fund that program yet, but we cannot build it at all without becoming an official nonprofit first.
What Your Donation Actually Does
Your gift funds the next family's version of a better ending. It is the difference between a story that reaches 280,000 people and gets pitched to a news outlet, and a story that never leaves someone's phone. It is the legal footing that lets us push an airline harder and faster.
It goes toward every family standing where Wasabi's family stood, orders in hand, days on the clock, and nowhere to turn, getting a different answer next time. It goes toward making sure fewer families ever have to choose between their rabbit and their life plans, and that no rabbit is ever again failed the way Rosie was.
Join Us
We did not get Alaska and Hawaii to change their policies with a big budget. We did it with guardians who told their stories, partners like Fly Together and the Rabbit Org Foundation who stood with us, and a community that showed up. This round is how we do that again, on purpose, against every airline still saying no.
Share this campaign. Tell your story. Even one dollar makes an incredible difference. Every seat under every seat, on every airline, starts here.
A nonpartisan campaign for a seat under the seat.
