Help Leslie Keep Her Home
Donation protected
Dear Family and Friends,
Thank you for visiting this “Go Fund Me” page, established for those who wish to aid in expenses involved in memory board and care facility for our loved one, Leslie Oliphant.
About 5 years ago, at age 49, Leslie was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s. The news was a complete shock. Leslie was young with much of life still ahead of her. Yet, when we think back, the signs were present years early. They were just not recognized for what they were. There is still so much we do not know about this disease.
Leslie’s doctor told us the disease would likely progress quickly due to her young age. Unfortunately, his prognosis appears to have been mostly correct. Immediate family remained Leslie’s primary caregivers up until early 2020, at which time the disease had progressed to the point where we simply could no longer care for her on our own. We moved Leslie into a residential board and care facility called “A Safe Haven” in February 2020. The house is located nearby and affords those close to Leslie the ability to visit often.
At present, Leslie’s condition is best described as being in the moderate/severe stage of Alzheimer’s. She remains able to walk, but otherwise requires assistants with all other aspects of daily living. She lost the ability to write a few years ago and has since lost the ability to communicate verbally. She is still able to hear, take direction and speak a few words. Most importantly, she is still able to smile.
As you can imagine, the cost for board and care at a memory care facility can be expensive. Leslie is young and was a “Stay at Home” mom. Thus, there is no financial relief from either State or Federal resources. Family had foresight to take out a home equity line of credit a few years back, a good portion of that which has been spent, along with personal savings, for her care. There are other options, including State Medi-Cal. However, Medi-Cal will only cover the cost for skilled nursing facilities and not the cost of board and care homes. At some point it is likely that Leslie will be moved into a skilled nursing facility. At present, it is our wishes to keep her in “A Safe Haven”. She is happy there, adjusted to her surroundings and they take good care of her, as we have for so many years.
All donations to this Go Fund Me account will be used to pay for Leslie’s board and care expenses. With your help, we hope to be able to keep Leslie at “A Safe Haven” board care through Fall and perhaps into Winter 2021.
Leslie has been a loving wife, mom, sister, daughter and grandmother. She was active in Girl Scouts and our local PTA. It cannot go without saying how very much we all love Leslie.
Thanks to our family and friends for all your love and ongoing support.
With much love and appreciation to you all,
Leslie Oliphant’s Family.
