On January 28, Leona was severely burned by a pot of boiling water while visiting her extended family in Illinois. Lauren and Nate immediately rushed her to the local hospital, Edwards, where she was treated for acute burns. A few hours later, she was transferred to the burn ICU at Loyola University Medical Center and has been under their excellent care ever since.
Leona has partial and full thickness burns on 18% of her body and has undergone several surgeries to treat the worst of them with skin grafts. Soon she will be transferred to a children's rehabilitation hospital at Northwestern and will need long-term medical care and rehabilitation after coming home.
Lauren spends most days in the hospital with Leona and returns to her mom's to care for Colette, now three months old. Nate barely left Leona's side during the first few weeks and still spends most nights with her. Team Leona is showing up strong: loving family members have been flying in to help care for Colette in week-long shifts.
This has been an ongoing trauma for the entire family, especially Lauren and Nate. Their herculean strength and fierce love continue to propel them through each day, but it has taken a significant toll on their energy and finances. We've created this fundraiser to help our loved ones handle many of the logistics on Leona's road to recovery. These include:
- Travel between Illinois <> California
- Rehabilitation center stay
- Parking, gas, and tolls to/from the hospital(s)
- Ongoing supplies, medical needs, and food
We deeply appreciate your donations. Thank you as well for all of your healing vibes, prayers, positive energy, cheerful gifts, and nourishing meals. Everything helps get this amazing family back to good health!
