Where it all began
Leo and Fanny met in 2018 in Guayaquil, Ecuador. In 2020, in the middle of a global pandemic, they chose to get married. The wedding almost didn't happen — but love won.
In 2021, an unexpected pregnancy filled their lives with joy. In May of that year, Fanny lost the baby.
One year later, on May 1st, 2022, life changed again in a matter of minutes.
What happened
On a regular Sunday afternoon, Leo suddenly developed a severe headache and lost consciousness. He was rushed into emergency surgery due to a brain hemorrhage caused by a congenital arteriovenous malformation he never knew he had.
Two emergency surgeries. A third to restore the bone of his skull. Weeks in the ICU. A tracheotomy. A feeding tube. Twenty medications reduced over time to six.
While he was sedated, Fanny visited him twice a day and read him every single message you sent. Because even then, he could hear.
On May 5th — his birthday — the doctors reported positive signs. His brain had electrical connections. He responded to stimuli. When Fanny spoke to him, he reacted.
And then, one day, she asked him to smile.
He did.
Where they are today
Four years later, Leo is quadriplegic. His life changed forever. But as a family, we have done everything possible to ensure that within his reality, he can live with dignity, stability, and the best quality of life possible.
His physical therapy is what keeps him stable. It prevents muscle spasticity, protects his body, and gives him a daily routine that is essential not just for his physical health — but for his emotional wellbeing too. It is the part of his day where he moves, where he activates, where he connects with the world.
His nutritional care requires specialized preparation and ongoing supervision to protect his weight, his digestive health, and his overall wellbeing.
None of this is a luxury. All of it is necessary. And right now, we need help to keep it going.
