Help Leisa Get Back On Her Feet - A Long Road to Recovery

Donation protected
Hi everyone, I’m Hayley, and I’m reaching out to share my mom's story.

In early February, my mom suffered a fall from her horse. Those who know her know how tough she is—she spent the next few weeks trying to manage the pain and push through. But by February 27th, the pain became unbearable, and she was admitted to the hospital. We had no idea then that this was just the start of a grueling, months-long battle for her life.

The Fight in the ICU
Shortly after being admitted, Leisa’s condition turned critical. She became septic and was rushed to the ICU. We spent weeks in a blur of surgeries, CT scans, and MRIs, desperately trying to find the source of the infection. Eventually, doctors identified abscesses in her stomach that were causing the sepsis.

She began to recover in Ward 4B, but the nightmare wasn't over. Her health declined sharply again, and she was rushed back to the ICU for a second time. This time, she required a tracheotomy with 100% oxygen support, dialysis, and was medically sedated for an entire week.

The Current Reality
Mom has fought through the worst of it. Her tracheotomy has been removed, she is off dialysis, and she is finally out of the ICU. However, she has now been in the hospital for over two months, and we still have no discharge date in sight.

While we are grateful she is stable, she is facing a new hurdle: she currently cannot walk. Because the hospital is severely short-staffed, she isn't receiving the intensive physiotherapy or mental health support she needs to regain her mobility and process the trauma of the last few months. Every day without rehabilitation makes her recovery more difficult.

Why We Are Fundraising
Between the medical crisis and the ongoing delays with Employment Insurance (EI), the costs of her long-term care and the expenses of supporting her are mounting daily. We are raising funds to cover:

  • Private Physiotherapy & Mental Health Care: To fill the gaps in hospital staffing and give Leisa the professional help she needs to walk again.
  • Immediate Living Expenses: To cover her rent, utilities, and bills so she doesn't lose her home while she’s fighting to recover.
  • Out-of-Pocket Hospital Costs: Parking, specialized supplies, and daily essentials that add up quickly.
  • Transition to Home: Preparing for the unforeseen costs of her eventual discharge and home care.

How You Can Help
My mom has always been an independent, active person. To see her immobilized is heartbreaking, but we know she has the spirit to get through this—she just needs the resources to do it.

Any donation, no matter the size, will go directly toward her recovery and financial stability. If you cannot donate, please consider sharing this link with your friends and family.

Thank you for being part of her village during this incredibly difficult time.

With love and gratitude,
Hayley and Leisa
