Leigh needs our help with mounting medical bills. At 44, she was diagnosed with colon cancer last October and underwent successful surgery. Though now cancer-free, she faces the highest risk of recurrence during the next 5 years, requiring intensive surveillance with frequent CT scans. As a self-employed individual, Leigh pays for her own insurance and all medical expenses out-of-pocket. She also carries the MSH6 genetic mutation (Lynch syndrome) which necessitates an upcoming hysterectomy on April 28th. Despite having insurance, her monthly medical payment plan has doubled to an amount she can't afford. We're raising $22,000 to cover her current medical debt and upcoming expenses so she can focus on healing instead of financial stress.
More on Leigh's Story
We're Leigh's support team – a circle of friends, coworkers, and loved ones who have rallied around her during a challenging time.
When Leigh was diagnosed with colon cancer last October at age 44, we watched her face this challenge with the same grace, humor, and strength she brings to everything in life. Throughout surgeries, hospital stays, and the uncertainty of diagnosis, Leigh has remained the thoughtful, caring person we've always known.
Leigh is the friend who's always there for everyone else. She's the one who remembers your birthday, checks in when you're having a tough day, and celebrates your victories as if they were her own. She's a passionate advocate for others and the kind of person who somehow manages to smile through hospital stays and medical procedures.
As a self-employed professional, Leigh shoulders the full burden of her insurance premiums and medical expenses without the safety net of employer-sponsored benefits. While her successful surgery removed the cancer, her doctors have emphasized that the greatest risk for colon cancer recurrence is within the next 5 years. This is why she's undergoing such frequent CT scans and rigorous surveillance. While the Lynch syndrome diagnosis does inform certain aspects of her care like bi-annual endoscopies, the primary focus of her treatment plan is monitoring for any signs of colon cancer recurrence.
Her genetic testing revealed she carries the MSH6 mutation (part of Lynch syndrome), significantly increasing her risk for several cancers. This includes endometrial and ovarian cancers and, as such, hysterectomy was recommended. This surgery is scheduled for April 28.
Despite having insurance, Leigh now faces overwhelming medical bills that have pushed her to the financial breaking point. Her monthly payment plan just doubled to an amount she simply cannot afford while continuing to pay for her ongoing care.
We've come together because Leigh would do the same for any of us. Our goal is to raise $22,000 to help cover her current medical debt and upcoming expenses. Leigh has always been there for others; now it's our turn to be there for her.
