Leia, my sweet dilute calico, just turned three and has been a cherished part of our family since I adopted her as a kitten from Paws and Claws in Evanston. She’s always been gentle and loving, instantly bonding with her brother Cleo, who came from my older brother’s home. Leia has always been a little shy, but her purrs and affection have brought us so much comfort. On the day of the fire, Cleo managed to escape, but Leia, terrified by the chaos, ran upstairs and hid in my room. Despite my pleas, the firefighters couldn’t prioritize her rescue, and she was trapped alone for nearly half an hour as smoke filled the house. Leia was found wedged between the walls, covered in soot, after hiding in fear from the smoke and noise. When they finally found her, she was soaked from the fire hose and traumatized, but alive. Our home suffered extensive damage—rooms flooded, belongings ruined, and the roof cut open to stop the fire. But our greatest concern is Leia’s health and recovery. I rushed her to the vet, where she was checked for injuries and is underwent emergency exams and X-rays. She needed urgent oxygen therapy in a chamber for 24 hours to prevent pulmonary edema, and will require follow-up appointments, blood work, and ongoing care. We’ve lost our home and all our supplies, so the funds will also help provide Leia and Cleo with food, litter, and basic necessities while we get back on our feet. Leia’s toys, treats, and even her bed were destroyed, and she’ll need grooming to remove the smoke smell and ensure her comfort. This has been our worst nightmare, but I’m determined to give Leia the chance to heal and live a long, happy life.
