This is a heart-felt request to help our dearest friend Lee Myers, who has found himself in dire straits.
We have all been through times when it felt as if the rug had just been pulled from under our feet. One moment everything seemed okay and the next moment what we had expected to always be there suddenly was not.
It has happened to every one of us. It has happened to someone we knew. To someone who mattered dearly and had we not reached out to help, who knows what would have happened next.
Here is the purpose of this letter:
Lee Myers, the man who has been my friend and my family for over 30 years, has found himself needing to leave his apartment, a place where he had been planning to live for the rest of his life because suddenly the landlord is taking it back, which in his part of California he has a right to do.
What’s so awful about that? you might ask. These things happen all the time. Yes, they do. Except in Lee’s case it couldn’t have happened at a worse time.
Over the last several months, his health (which has been poor for a number of years) has taken a turn for the worse and the stress of this unexpected move has exacerbated the situation.
Lee is 71 years old (almost 72). He is self-employed and collects a small social security check. Without working, it’s not enough to pay the basic bills and a low rent.
Add to this the fact that his nearly16 year old dog, Jersey, is declining rapidly, his legs often don’t hold him up and Lee needs to help him walk.
And this is when the letter from the landlord came.
I am blessed with very good friends. But I can honestly say that during the entire 30 plus years that Lee has been in my life, he has NEVER let me down on anything.
He was always there, with whatever I needed, giving his all, ready to give more. I am not alone in this. Everyone who has had the good fortune to have Lee as their friend would say the same.
An amazing human being, a kind and loving friend, a very private person, he became more reclusive as he got older.
Imagine not being able to work for a while because of declining health, watching your beloved dog deteriorate... watching your bank account drain, what little money you had going to bills...
And now imagine with all this happening, suddenly having to move!
And it all but broke the camel’s back. The stress of it became too much for Lee. Depression followed.
Except, he can’t afford to stay depressed. He needs to act. Find a place to move. Pack, figure out the details of it, and move. Then unpack, settle... and all the rest of it. All of this requires money and physical strength.
And right now he has neither.
Lee’s best friend, Tony Russo, and I, Auriela McCarthy, are turning to everyone who knows and loves Lee, to our own personal friends, and to everyone else reading this.
Please, open your hearts and give what you can, so we can quickly raise some funds and help Lee move.
We want to raise enough to cover his moving expenses, the money to rent a new place, and some additional money to relieve the stress of not being able to work right now.
To our calculations, $3,000 would take care of it. $5,000 would make an enormous difference.
Please, share this with your fiends and family. Let’s do it together. And let’s do it fast. He has to move out soon and right now he is too depressed and unwell to have the needed energy to create the needed money.
Let’s remember the wisdom and the compassion of “Here but for the love of God go I.”
We rely on the kindness of strangers. And we rely on the love of the friends we have.
Please give generously, knowing also that no gift is too small. Combined, it will make all the difference in the life of a very good human being, a man whose selfless kindness has enriched the lives of so many.
