This is one of my closest friends, Leanne, from Cork. She is one of the most caring, determined, and positive people I know. Leanne has always led a physically active lifestyle, previously having a career in the Irish Defence Forces, where she also served overseas, and outside of work, she has always been an avid gym goer.

Shortly after graduating from UCC in 2025, Leanne was diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND). It began with muscle spasms, seizures, and problems in her legs, which then expanded to other parts of her body, and impaired her speech. It has since deteriorated further and has severely impacted her ability to walk. She can no longer walk without a walking aid. FND is a debilitating condition, and it has affected every aspect of her life. Despite this, Leanne has tried to remain hopeful and determined, but I can see how exhausting it must be to stay positive when progress is slow and setbacks are constant.

Leanne has sought help from both the public and private health sectors, but unfortunately, treatments for this condition are limited in Ireland. Leanne had to reach out to a service in Manchester, which offers intensive treatment for FND, however, this treatment is extremely costly, and professionals have advised Leanne that she will need several rounds of treatment before she can regain her mobility.

We are asking for support so Leanne can continue these treatments and take steps toward walking again. She is incredibly determined and refuses to give up, and I truly believe she will overcome this. She is hoping for the day when she can take her little bundle of joy, Bear (her dog), for a walk without having to ask for help or use an aid.
