My mother, Sandra Rivera, affectionately known as Sandy, Mamacita, a second mom and favorite auntie to those who knew and loved her had a heart of gold. She treated everyone like family, and could light up a room with her vibrant laugh and signature smile. She was always thinking of others and putting herself last. She loved her children and grandchildren fiercely in every opportunity she was given. She always let us know we were her greatest blessings and accomplishment, and we are grief stricken knowing those words will be etched in our memories never to hear them uttered again.
Earlier this year Sandra was diagnosed with advanced cholangiocarcinoma, a very rare and aggressive form of cancer. It was a rough start to treatment plagued by frequent hospitalizations. However, she took this battle on strengthened through the faith and encouragement of all those who loved her dearly. With a lot of uncertainty on this path, we tried to make the most of every moment we had with her. A few weeks ago she contracted COVID, and she fought every day for 2.5 weeks. However her already frail body could not withstand the pressures of this disease. And on the morning of August 29th we were called to her bedside to stand beside her as she was pulled from the ventilator to put her body to rest. It was the most peaceful passing we could have asked for given the situation, and the only consolation is that perhaps this was saving us an even greater suffering ahead.
Losing your mother at any age is earth shattering, but we are stronger knowing we had a lifetime of love to cherish.
We appreciate many people asking how they can help to alleviate things for our family right now and help to give my mother the memorial services she deserves. And even with the battles she was fighting, we thought we had time to figure things out. As we scramble to prepare for things now, please consider donating to make funds available to help set up her services as soon as possible.
We also want to thank everyone who has been there to support us through this year, to love my mother, honor her and life and offered their resources through to the end.
