Our hearts are shattered.

Lucas was only two years old—two years of laughter, wonder, curiosity, and pure love. People often say to “prepare yourself” for loss, but that advice is meant for when someone has lived a long, full life. How could anyone ever prepare for the loss of a baby? There is simply no way. Nothing can ready you for the moment a child so full of life is suddenly gone.

Our family was completely blindsided. We are still searching for answers—how a little boy who was so vibrant, playful, and full of light could be taken from this world in an instant. And now, in the midst of our grief, we are faced with decisions no parents or family should ever have to make.

We do not have a burial plot.

We do not have the means to cover funeral costs or medical bills.

We are not prepared to choose the tiny casket that no one should ever have to choose for their child.

We are humbly asking for help—for my sister, her husband, and for Lucas’ big sister and brother, who are trying to make sense of a world suddenly missing their baby brother. We just want to give Lucas the peaceful, loving farewell he deserves and lay our sweet boy to rest.

The only small comfort we can hold onto is believing that he is now in heaven, wrapped in the arms of our mother, grandmother, and aunt. But here on earth, we are left with a reality we never imagined. Instead of planning his second Christmas, we are planning his funeral.
