Keanae Mahealani Ka‘anapu Kelly Omoto was a once-in-a-lifetime soul. She was the kind of person who could light up any room simply by walking into it. She was always smiling, always willing to make a new friend, and always finding ways to bring joy to the people around her. It was her gift. In our ‘ohana, among her friends, and in every space she entered, she carried a strong, loving spirit that made everyone feel so welcomed and cared for. Everyone who knew Keanae loved her, and anyone fortunate enough to meet her was better for it.
That is why the events of June 19 have been so devastating for our ‘ohana. On the evening of June 19, we lost our beloved Keanae in a tragedy that has left us heartbroken and struggling to imagine a world without her. At approximately 8:30 p.m., the vehicle she was riding in was traveling along Military Road East in Spanaway, Washington. According to authorities, the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when it approached a resident mowing his lawn. The driver swerved, left the roadway, and struck two trees in front of a nearby property with such force that the vehicle was split in half. Keanae was a backseat passenger in that vehicle. She was not behind the wheel. She did not make the decisions that led to that crash. She did not choose the speed, the risk, or the actions that followed. She was an innocent passenger whose life was taken in an instant because of choices that were entirely beyond her control.
In a matter of seconds, a series of decisions changed countless lives forever. Keanae was denied the chance to live on. She paid the ultimate price for choices she never made. The impact claimed her life at the scene and left all of us with an aching pain that words fail to describe. One moment she was here—laughing, loving, making memories, and planning for tomorrow. She was planning to come home to us in Hawai‘i this Wednesday, June 24, to make a surprise visit. But she never got to make it to see that day. Our family could have made plans to hangout with her and enjoy her presence, but instead we have to wipe our tears and fight to make funeral arrangements.
She was a daughter. A wife. A sister. An aunty. A cousin. A granddaughter. A cherished friend. You name it. She was the person people called when they needed comfort, encouragement, or simply someone to listen. She loved deeply and was deeply loved in return. Her life touched far more people than she could have ever known.
Today, we are not only mourning the loss of the person she was—we are mourning the years she was robbed of. The memories she will never get to make. The milestones she will never reach. The love she still had left to give.
As we navigate this loss, we are asking for support to help cover funeral, memorial, and transportation expenses so that we can honor her final journey and lay her to rest in her beloved home, Hawai‘i, surrounded by the love of her ‘ohana and the place that will always be a part of her. Nothing can bring Keanae back. No amount of money can replace her laughter, her kindness, her presence, or the love she gave so freely. But your support will help us give her the beautiful farewell she deserves and allow us the time and space to grieve, heal, and honor her memory.
If you are unable to donate, we ask that you please share her story. Help us ensure that Keanae is remembered not for the tragedy that took her life, but for the incredible life she lived and the countless people she loved along the way. Keanae was so much more than a victim in an accident report, and she shouldn’t be associated with the choices that someone else had made.
