My mom, Elise Collins, was my world. She worked tirelessly to take care of us, always putting others before herself. She fought hard and loved even harder, welcoming everyone with warmth and kindness. Elise had a way of loving you even when you stopped loving yourself, and if you needed help, she would always be there, no matter what. She raised us to work hard, to be kind, loving, and resilient because, in her eyes, there was no other choice.

Last month, we celebrated my graduation in Maryland together, and everything seemed fine. She had some pain, but nothing out of the ordinary. We spent Christmas and a few days after together, making memories I will always cherish. In the first week of January, things changed suddenly. She stopped sleeping, eating, and drinking, and became extremely agitated and confused. After two days, she was taken to the hospital, where doctors discovered multiple massive brain tumors. The damage was severe, and after surgery, she was left scarred, blind, and unable to move half of her face. Despite a brief period of progress, she passed away soon after.

Elise was a fashion queen who always dressed to impress, and she would have never wanted anyone to see her in such a vulnerable state. As an Active Duty Marine, I have to return from leave soon, and I did not have time to push the funeral out to afford her burial. The cemetery she wished to be buried at requires payment by February 11th to secure the funeral on the 13th, and the costs are overwhelming. I cannot afford it alone. Anything helps—even if I can't reach the full amount, getting closer will help me put the remainder on my credit card and give her the farewell she deserves.
