Laurie Medina has spent her life caring for others. She has worked in assisted living as a QMAP and caregiver for many years, always showing kindness and compassion to the people around her. Anyone who knows Laurie knows there is not a mean soul in her body. She loves helping everyone, and she has given so much of herself to others over the years. At the same time, Laurie has carried heartbreaking personal loss. She lost her husband a few years ago, and she also lost her daughter. Even through that grief, she stepped up to raise her developmentally delayed grandchild, putting their needs first and doing everything she could to create stability and care at home.
About six months ago, Laurie’s own health took a serious turn when she ended up in the hospital in surgery due to severe infection. She is trying not to lose her toe but every time she walks on it opens and bleeds. She has not been cleared by the doctor to work . She was admitted to the hospital for nearly a month because of the infections, wounds, and the discovery that she is diabetic. After being started on antibiotics, she became very sick, and she is still not healed. Her doctors have not cleared her to return to work, leaving her without the income she depended on. Laurie’s oldest son is living with them and doing his best to help support the household, but he cannot cover everything on his own. Laurie used her tax refund to catch up on rent and also borrowed money from her sister, but those resources have now run out.
Today, Laurie is facing eviction and is frightened about what will happen to her and her grandson. She is waiting to be approved for disability and hoping for housing support, but right now she urgently needs help to stay stable and safe. Donations will help Laurie catch up on rent or move into a short-term apartment while she waits for longer-term support. If you are able to give, any amount would mean so much. If you cannot donate, please consider sharing this fundraiser and keeping Laurie and her grandson in your prayers.
