Lauren was a fit, healthy 34 year old, establishing a following in her career as a hairdresser. Then in June of 2020 she contracted COVID while working. She never recovered. In fact, new and endless symptoms continue to defeat her. Over the last year she has had fevers, loss of smell and taste, brain fog, a fracture in her foot, cough, hair loss, migraines, and loss of the ability to recall words. The worst has been and continues to be extensive nerve pain, memory loss, anxiety/ depression, and constant fatigue. She did not have any of these problems before COVID.
These debilitating symptoms have robbed her of her ability to work for the last fourteen months, and continue to do so. As an independent worker she is self-insured. She applied for disability and was turned down. She and her family hired a lawyer to help. Her parents are on a fixed income, her savings are gone, and the COVID relief money, which was her source of income, has ended.
This hard working, responsible young woman is not only terribly ill, but in desperate financial need. Without a source of income, like disability insurance, she cannot pay for basic living expenses like food and rent. Then there are the legal fees and the overwhelming medical expenses. She needs to take Uber to get to her doctor appointments, because she can no longer drive. As we all know, insurance doesn’t cover everything.
She has done physical therapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy, as well as acupuncture. She has seen so many specialists including neurologists, pulmonologists, orthopedists, rheumatologists, cardiologists, psychologists, and endocrinologists. She is vaccinated. There is little research and no protocols for COVID long haulers. Every time she is referred to another doctor, she receives new treatments and new drugs, some with awful side effects. The cycle of experimenting with treatments and drugs continues.
Can you imagine if this was your child? If this was your hairdresser or barber, wouldn’t you want to help them?
