Why are we raising money?
Lauren's road to recovery requires extensive medical care. Please consider donating to help relieve their financial burden.
What happened?
Wes and Lauren have been anxiously waiting to announce that they were expecting a baby in April 2022. During a pregnancy wellness check the results from a blood test indicated a potential serious health concern. Further tests were performed and Lauren was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia . She was urgently admitted to Deaconess Hospital and has started a two week treatment of continuous chemotherapy. During the pandemic no visitors are allowed. Wes has been granted a special exception, but unfortunately Poppy has to stay home. They were told to expect an extended stay and look forward to seeing Poppy as soon as possible.

These last couple days have been unimaginable. The new realities and decisions we’ve faced are almost impossible to describe. I think unimaginable is the word. We are so grateful for the love and support we’ve seen so far. This update will be lengthy, but we wanted to share the story so you can join us, and see where God has shown up.
So first the cancer. It’s called acute myeloid leukemia (AML). This website has helped me understand some things. This cancer is scary and aggressive and starts in Lauren’s bone marrow; which creates her blood. There are a lot of details around what our treatment looks like. A series of chemotherapy, blood transfusions, and bone marrow biopsies are the main elements. Depending on how these go we may need to do a bone marrow transplant in Seattle. This will span over the next 5-6 months at least. Now the chemo is designed to kill all rapidly forming blood cells including the cancer cells, and Lauren’s heathy cells, and the cells that would be building blocks & support for baby and its development.
Next to discuss is our sweet, angelic baby. Our baby has been a miracle! It saved Lauren’s life. Without baby, we would never had the blood work done that revealed the cancer within. The initial AML symptoms are seemingly mild, but then they turn into major issues at which point the cancer may become severely spread throughout and treatment is much more grim. Up until Tuesday of this week Lauren felt totally fine, but with baby we had the opportunity to see what was deeper. So we can say that this cancer was caught early because of baby, and we now have a much better chance of Lauren’s outcome. Baby is the true miracle and blessing in this situation.
We received some words of comfort from our nurse. She said something that for the first time allowed an ounce of light in, “Maybe this baby’s purpose was to save Laurens life?” Which tied back to knowing without baby we would not have found the cancer until too late.
On Tuesday & Wednesday we had to face the hardest, most unfair, indescribable, impossible decision we may (or anyone may) ever have to make. With our greatest sadness, we said goodbye to our baby on Earth with hopes of hello in heaven.
Today we are receiving our first blood transfusion. I’m eternally grateful for the donor and the recipient, my precious Lauren. As of today we’re feeling a constant state of brokenness and sorrow with small moments of light. We’re asking God for more light to come in. It’s so hard not having visitors. Please pray that Lauren improves as there could be a possibility to go home for some treatments. Lauren desperately wants to hold and kiss our Poppy-Pie.
We love and need you all,
Lauren, Wes, and Poppy
