My younger sister, Laura Whitney, recently received the devastating news that she has been diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer. Because our parents adopted her as an infant, she does not know her birth family or medical history, which makes things more uncertain and frightening. She has already been through so much with losing both of our parents at age 14 and 19. Now, she must face at a young age months of chemotherapy, targeted therapy, lumpectomy or mastectomy (depending on how things progress), radiation treatment, and at least 5 years of estrogen/progesterone blocking medication. There are multiple medical risks and unwanted body effects involved that go far beyond breast and hair loss.

Laura has always had the dream of becoming a mother to her own biological children and having a family of her own. This is very important to her to be able to have the opportunity in the future, once she fully recovers and is able to achieve stability.

Unfortunately, the chemotherapy will possibly make her infertile at a young age. Freezing her eggs can help preserve her fertility before undergoing such aggressive cancer treatments. Because Laura’s cancer is fast-growing, the plan of her medical team is to freeze her eggs as soon as possible, which involves costly medication and medical procedures. After this is finished, she has to then immediately undergo chemotherapy. Sadly, egg freezing and fertility treatments are not covered by her medical insurance. With all of the difficult medical procedures and heavy treatments ahead, Laura also faces uncertainty with finances and job security, and her current pursuit of becoming a nurse has now been put on hold. Along with surgery, her treatments will last at least a year, and her medication and years of vigilance will continue for the foreseeable future.

Please help me by supporting my sister, who means the world to me. She has already been through so much and is committed to successfully overcoming her cancer diagnosis. She wants to follow in our mother’s footsteps and eventually become a nurse. She is eager to help and inspire others in the future.
