After getting injured 8 years ago, Laura has recovered and adjusted to a new reality, and she became independent again in 2019 (4 short months before Covid – yay).

But there’s a final piece that’s still missing: a car that she can drive on her own.

We’re looking to help Laura buy a wheelchair-accessible minivan with a fold-out ramp so that she can get herself and her scooter safely in and out of the vehicle.

Having a wheelchair-accessible minivan will allow her to go to work meetings on her own, avoid snowy sidewalks and un-shoveled curb cutouts in the winter, expand her social life, and avoid public transportation, especially at night as she has had a few uncomfortable (to downright scary) situations.

Another “but”… these things are pricey (like $85,000 for a new one). We’re looking at used vans to keep the cost lower, but they still do not come cheap. Check out these used cars for an idea of what we’re talking about.

Laura has looked into every grant and possible source of assistance out there, and it’s been a surprising and disappointing experience to find out that there really just isn’t much – if anything – available to her. And she is already planning on using a good chunk of savings to help pay for this.
