My name is Laura Perkins, and I am a high school art teacher in Indiana. For more than 20 years, I’ve dedicated my life to helping students express themselves creatively, build confidence, and find their voices through art. Today, I am facing the hardest challenge of my life—and I am asking for help.
Earlier this year, after finding a lump, I was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) as well as Metastatic Squamous Cell Carcinoma of Unknown Primary (SCCUP), a rare and complex cancer. Despite extensive testing, doctors have not been able to locate the original tumor for the squamous cell carcinoma, which makes treatment more difficult.
The encouraging news is that both cancers are treatable. My medical teams at Fort Wayne Medical Oncology and Hematology and the Cleveland Clinic are working closely together on an aggressive, coordinated treatment plan with curative intent. While the road ahead is long, my doctors remain hopeful—and I am determined to fight.
I am 47 years old, married to my husband since 2012, and together we are raising three incredible children:
Ethan, a senior at Ball State University studying Media Production

Ella, a freshman at Indiana University who dreams of becoming a doctor or medical researcher

Gavin, our 12-year-old who just started middle school and is excited to play football for the first time

I have already begun intensive chemotherapy and immunotherapy, with surgeries, radiation, and ongoing appointments still ahead. I will need to miss significant time from work for treatment and recovery, including an extended stay in Cleveland, Ohio, for daily radiation.
As a teacher, my paid time off is limited. I am quickly running out of PTO and will not have enough to cover the time needed for surgery, radiation, and future medical care. At the same time, we are facing outstanding medical bills, uncovered treatment costs, travel and lodging expenses, and the everyday costs of supporting our family while my ability to work is reduced.
I have always been someone who gives—through teaching, supporting students, helping friends, and caring for my family. Asking for help does not come easily, but right now, it is necessary. Every donation, no matter the size, will go directly toward medical bills, lost income, treatment-related travel, and basic living expenses while I fight these cancers.
Your kindness and generosity will help ease the financial burden on our family and allow me to focus on healing and being present for my children. They still need their mom, and I am determined to fight for many more years with them.
Thank you for reading my story, sharing this fundraiser, and supporting us during this incredibly difficult time.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Laura Perkins & Family
