Laura (Yixuan) Xiong needs our help. She's battling a rare sarcoma. Traditional chemo has slowed the tumor's growth, but it isn't shrinking. Her doctors believe that proton radiation treatments will do the trick. That's the good news! The cost, however, is prohibitive. To receive this treatment she must move to New Jersey for 8 weeks, where the only proton radiation machine is located. Her out of pocket costs for the treatment and related expenses will be around $14,000, much more than she has ready to hand. Laura's mom flew to NY several months ago to be with her as she goes through her treatments. Originally that time was to be 3-4 months. But this proton radiation strategy has added time and unanticipated expenses.
Laura is the only child of a single mom, so it hasn't been easy: the family has already had to drain much of their savings during her treatment. We're hoping that many of you will find it in your hearts to help Laura get the treatment that she needs.
For those who don't know her, Laura is a brilliant senior biochemistry major at Hofstra University and an active member of the Honors College. She has been doing advanced research for the past three and a half years. and has just one semester left before she finishes her B.S. Afterwards, her plan is to attend graduate school with the goal of an eventual career as a research scientist, perhaps working in fields related to cancer research.
The time to help Laura is now. Her doctors want to start the treatments within 2 weeks. Please do what you can. All money raised will go directly to the medical, housing and transportation bills associated with her proton radiation treatments. Once they are done, her plan is to rest up and return in Spring 2019 to finish her degree. Your gifts can make that happen. Every penny helps!!
