Let me start by sharing a little about my friend’s journey for the past 10 months. In August 2020 while we were still in the height of the pandemic, Laura went for her annual routine mammogram. She was asked by many friends and family members to think about postponing the testing since walking into a medical facility during the COVID pandemic seemed risky and scary. Laura is a teacher and everyone knows that teachers tend to make all their appointments in the summer because they have limited availability during the school year. The results were not what she expected. Doctors discovered a mass in Laura’s right breast. She was immediately sent for an ultrasound and a biopsy so doctors could have a better look at it. The results from the biopsy came in and that’s when Laura was told the devastating news that the mass was in fact cancerous. Unfortunately, that’s not where the story ended, or the cancer. Doctors sent Laura for additional imaging of both breasts. This time, those additional scans showed a tumor in the left breast! Typically breast cancer is only seen in one breast, having two different types of tumors on both sides is rare. Laura’s doctors quickly came up with different options and treatment plans. She made the difficult decision to undergo a double mastectomy but felt it was the best option for her. Just a few short weeks after being diagnosed she underwent a life altering surgery and had that double mastectomy doctors recommended. Laura’s life has been completely turned upside down while she deals with not only the physical pain of cancer but the emotional and mental effects of cancer. Laura is a single mom with the sweetest daughter, who has had a front row seat to the fight that her mom has been putting up for the last few months. If you know anything about Laura, you know she is as tough as they come. She believes women are strong as hell and can do anything! She is also the person who would never ask for help…so I am asking! Despite returning to work full-time only a few weeks after surgery, the medical bills are just continuing to add up and she will be undergoing a reconstructive surgery in July. We want to make sure the only thing Laura has to worry about is her recovery and enjoying each and every day, not how she will pay the next medical bill.
Laura is the strongest person and an incredible mom
