Treasure Island Nightmare The Cover Up and Environmental Racism Treasure Island has received national focus as a result of widespread radiation contamination that triggers alarm in residents, government officials and the mainstream media. As early as 2011, health officials accused a Navy contractor of exposing children to radioactive dust at a Boys & Girls Club and early childhood development center on the island. In 2010 a California Public Health official revealed Navy contractors excavated 16,000 cubic yards of dirt with radiation levels 400 times higher than EPA human exposure limits for soil.
At a February 8, 2021 hearing of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors dedicated to the human travesty unfolding on the naval base once used as a nuclear training facility, residents and whistleblowers testified about health conditions they believe are due to radiation, heavy metal and chemical exposures. District Supervisor Matt Haney called out the Navy for failing to attend and called on the city to "protect all our residents." Haney stated "radiological objects continue to be discovered close to homes, raising questions about how much we really know and their impacts on residents health."
Many people sympathize with the plight of Treasure Island residents but don't know how to help!
The Hunters Point Community Biomonitoring Program has been urged by Treasure Island activists to join the fight to protect the lives and health of TI residents. Biomonitoring measures pollution in people and HP Biomonitoring has been successful in detecting radioactive biomarkers and cancer causing heavy metals in residents and workers at the system of federal Superfund sites at Hunters Point.
The Treasure Island Biomonitoring Program - with your help - can help explain why children have been diagnosed with brainstem gliomas - rare cancers known to be induced by exposure to heavy metals and radiation. Biomonitoring improves medical care for those who have been screened by offering doctors new information about cause and effect toxic exposures.
The Treasure Island Biomonitoring Program - TI Biomonitoring - will rely on Genova Diagnostics Comprehensive Urine Elements Profile test, capable of detecting up to 35 toxic elements. The test is performed by a certified laboratory using mass spectrometry augmented by geospatial mapping - identifying the address where exposed residents live in relationship to known toxic sites and urine toxicology screenings conducted on neighbors.
TI Biomonitoring will identify sources of funding for very low income residents lacking insurance or self pay options for the biomonitoring medical evaluation and urinary screening. The cost of the test is $129.00. It is covered by Medicare, Tricare and partially covered by most private medical insurance plans. It is not covered by Medical, San Francisco Health Plan or Kaiser and those most in need of testing are unable to pay for the study.
TI Biomonitoring will create a cohort of residents screened that can advance research, medical management and legal protections...including funding for a Treasure Island Toxic Registry that will offer medical monitoring and relocation.
