Thanks for helping us deck cancer in the face!
Nine years ago, just before Christmas, my mum was diagnosed with breast cancer and given three weeks to live. She's still fighting today, and it has been a rollercoaster of emotions and close calls since. Her strength inspired me to take an idea I once thought was impossible and turn it into something real.
My name is Sam Macpherson, and I'm starting a charity called Decks 4 Cancer, a project that raises funds for cancer sufferers through the auction of one-of-a-kind, hand-painted skateboard decks. These aren’t just pieces of graffiti art, many will also become rare memorabilia, signed or created by athletes, musicians, and public figures, making each deck a unique collector's item with purpose.
To get this off the ground, we’re seeking $25,000 to cover our startup costs: legal registration, shipping of decks to and from artists worldwide, a promotional budget, and an operating reserve. To be completely honest, it’s starting with the basics, but it’s a kick start to grow into what we think it can become, and we can start raising money as a full-fledged charity.
With the support of generous partners like Folklore Skateboards, who are donating blank art decks, and Sprayism/Ironlak, who are providing cancer-pink paint pens for every participating artist, we’re building something meaningful, a charity with creativity, community, and compassion at its core.
The mission is simple: to help people in their immediate journey with cancer.
Until we establish our own direct outreach programs to support families affected by cancer, funds will predominantly be donated to the charities Ronald McDonald House and the McGrath Foundation. I chose those charities because they were the ones that have helped the most with not just my mother, but also my nephew who was diagnosed on Christmas eve 2022 and devastatingly passed on March 10th, 2024.
This charity is deeply personal. It’s also a way for me to bring together many of the things I love most, art, skateboarding, music, sports, helping people and much more, to make a difference.
If you’ve been touched by cancer, if you believe in art, or if you want to be part of something authentic and grassroots, please consider donating. Every dollar helps us turn this vision into a lasting legacy.
