On 1st July 2026, a much-loved dog named Freya went missing in the Colchester area. Her owner didn't know if she'd see her again. Freya is a nervous dog by nature. Like any dog who finds themselves in a frightening, unfamiliar situation, her survival instincts took over — even a strong bond with her owner wasn't enough to bring her straight home. Calling her name and searching in groups only pushed her further away and deeper into hiding.
Today, Freya was found safe — but only with the help of FIDO, a search and rescue group based over in Ipswich. They gave up their time to travel to Colchester, bringing the specialist knowledge and equipment that made all the difference, including the patience needed to approach a frightened dog safely. We are hugely grateful to them — but Colchester shouldn't have to rely on a team from another town every time a dog goes missing.
Freya's story had a happy ending. Not every owner is so lucky, and the longer a dog stays missing, the harder recovery can become. That's why we want to build a dedicated Missing Dog Search Team, based right here in Colchester — a group of local volunteers, giving up their own time, ready to help when they're needed.
What your donation funds:
- Trail/wildlife cameras for monitoring feeding and scent stations
- Humane traps and slip leads for safe, low-stress recovery
- First aid kits (canine and human) for search volunteers
- Torches, head-torches, and high-vis clothing for night searches
- Two-way radios for coordinating search teams safely
- Printed posters and flyers for local search efforts
- Fuel and travel costs so we can respond as quickly as our volunteers are able
- Training resources so every volunteer follows safe, proven recovery techniques
Why it matters:
A lost dog's best chance of getting home comes down to calm, knowledgeable searching — not chasing or crowding, which can push a frightened dog further away, regardless of temperament. With our own local team, trained in scent-based lures, feeding stations, and safe sighting protocols, Colchester owners will know that support is close to hand when they need it most, rather than waiting on a team from another town.
Freya made it home. Let's make sure every lost dog in Colchester has that same chance — with a support team of their own, ready and waiting.
