*UPDATE BELOW *
We are raising money for LaToya Collier and her children for legal aid and meals. On October 26th Stalling Island Middle School, upon an incomplete investigation, and without Ms. Collier's presence, her 11 YEAR OLD SON was deemed guilty until proven innocent. Ms. Collier was called to come to the school, without any knowledge of the situation, and watched the police handcuff and arrest her little boy. He was taken to the courthouse and then processed at the Youth Detention Center. As of Friday, this child, with no prior criminal history, is on house arrest with nightly checks by officials and nightly calls to confirm that he is at home. He is also not allowed to be without adult supervision. Ms. Collier is a single working mother with 3 children, and this situation is impossible for her. But this is the only option she has been given. She needs legal representation to help her son, she needs help with meals since she cannot leave her son alone or take him with her anywhere. The tribunal hearing date has not yet been announced but what we do know is that it could be as early as OCT 31st, but no more than 10 days away, so this is URGENT. The email that was sent out to ALL of the Stallings Island Middle School parents by the Principal was done so in haste. Not only is the email speculative, it is not a reflection of this little boy’s truth. Please help us get justice for this child! An 11 year old boy was instantly found guilty the second the Principal sent out the email that stated, "Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the student intentionally used the blade to cut the hand of another student that was seated next to them." There was not enough time for anyone to fully investigate such a serious accusation. This child is being treated like an adult criminal and it is unacceptable. His story has not been told, several witnesses have not been heard. Further investigation is desperately needed. Many students are upset and confused at what has happened to Ms. Collier’s son. Help this mother help her son and all of our children.
UPDATE: Tribunal was Monday (Nov 7). The 11 year old accused was charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds. He found the tool on school grounds, he did not bring it to school to harm his classmate who sat right next to him. Key witness statements were collected days after the incident, not at the time of the incident, and then not allowed at the tribunal unless the witnesses (children) were present. Mrs Collier was NOT told they would need to be present. The parents of the brave children who made statements, also were not made aware that to be heard, they would have to be present. This is why Ms Collier needs help. For now her son is learning from home. We need to help her get the truth out and get this 11 year old child back in school ASAP. Without an appeal he will not be able return to school until August.
