Help Latina & Filipina Young Mom in UBC Midwifery
This year, Charmaine will be one of twenty handpicked candidates entering UBC’s Midwifery Program. With an acceptance rate of 10-13%, midwifery is often regarded as one of UBC’s most competitive programs—not to mention as a person of colour.
As a Latina and Filipina woman, Charmaine is redefining what it means to be a midwife in the Western world. She has a firm belief that every birthing individual deserves affirming and inclusive care, which was informed by her own birth experience.
She is a young mother who conquers full-time school, work, and parenthood with grit, compassion, and grace. She exudes soulful joy and is a profound lover of her friends and family. Charmaine rarely asks for help but gives it so willingly, and for that, her heart is so pure.
As a young mother with a fiancee in nursing school full-time, she needs financial support to participate in the Midwifery Program. With day-care expenses, a family to feed, tuition, textbooks, student fees, rent, and daily living, the costs are enormous. Even with student loans and a part-time job, her family will not be able to make their expenses without help.
We need BIPOC folks to take up space in order to create change. Charmaine is driven, passionate, and knows what care birthing individuals seek. By supporting her, you are uplifting a generation of BIPOC individuals and families that will access her exceptional care—with the goal of one day opening a BIPOC-focused birthing centre.
Education is the greatest investment Charmaine can make in her future, as well as her daughter’s. In graduating from the Midwifery Program, Charmaine will become the first person in her family to hold a post-secondary degree.
