Hi, my name is LaShawn Spencer & on February 29th, I was tragically shot by my then-boyfriend in an act of domestic violence. I sustained severe injuries to my small & large intestines, colon, kidney, & my gallbladder. One bullet exited my left hip, which severed the nerves in my left leg, causing me to lose feeling currently from my calf to my toes. I was doing physical therapy until it became too painful for me to continue. I have been seeing surgeons, an orthopedic doctor, and most recently a neurologist who has now sent me to a pain clinic. We are in talks of doing an additional surgery to insert a Spinal Cord Simulator to help me deal with the continuous pain that I have in my leg & hip. This surgery would have me out of commission for up to 8 weeks.
I have applied for disability & was denied, so now I'm getting a lawyer involved. Unfortunately, I'm unable to work due to not being able to sit or stand very long, but have still been applying for jobs. I am trying to stay afloat but I feel like I'm drowning trying to pay bills. I have a 7-year-old son who I'm trying to stay strong for, but it's getting harder each passing day. I have gotten help from some great people over the last few months, & I appreciate all that they have done. I honestly don't know what else to do, but was told that I needed to tell my story in my own words. Thanks, C.M., for the motivation....
