Help Laryssa's Baby Fight Hyperinsulinism

My name is Jacqueline. I'm trying to raise money for my friend Laryssa. We have been friends for over 10 years. Ever since I arrived in Utah, she's been a great help for me. She's an amazing mom and wife. I would like to help Laryssa in this difficult moment.

Laryssa's fifth child, a baby girl, was born last month. Her baby had some difficulties following the birth, including trouble with breathing, eating, and maintaining her body temperature. Mother and baby were discharged from the hospital, in spite of these difficulties. After returning home, the baby had four episodes where she stopped breathing for a few seconds and she refused to eat. Her father took her to the ER, where she stopped breathing completely. Fortunately, they were able to revive her with the equipment available in the emergency room. At barely 2 days old, she was fighting for her life and was admitted to the NICU in a critical state. After extensive testing, she was diagnosed with hyperinsulinism, a rare congenital disease that affects 1 in 50,000 newborns. What is hyperinsulinism? The pancreas produces high amounts of insulin, decreasing the sugar and causing hypoglycemia. Hyperinsulinism is the opposite of diabetes, which produces too little insulin. Only two places in the USA treat hyperinsulinism. The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia has been treating this condition for 28 years, treating more that 1750 patients.

The baby girl is being transferred to Philadelphia, and she can only go by medical air flight, since she needs intensive care with a medical team; a commercial flight is impossible. After staying in the NICU for 5 weeks, the baby finally got transportation and was admitted to CHOP. She will need to do more tests, including a PET scan, to check her pancreas and complete pre-exams for surgery. One of the parents will stay with the baby in Philadelphia, while the other needs to work and stay with the other children.

The money raised will alleviate the financial stress of this challenging moment that the family is going through to pay medical bills. A congenital illness can take a major toll on the entire family; while being in the ICU naturally incurs high costs even with insurance, there is the additional cost involved with complex procedures and medication to help her with her treatment, and there is also the time the mother will spend taking care of the baby in Philadelphia, which includes the hotel, food, and the return flight. There is a Ronald McDonald House, where they have bedrooms and kitchens for families while their children are treated at little or no cost, which is packed, and they said they are rejecting around 50 families daily because they don't have space. The estimated length of stay is a minimum of 4 weeks and up to 8 weeks.
