Help Lara, Melendez Family Rebuild A Home

On April 6, 2021 there was a fire on our building at around 1pm,

89-07 34 avenue, Queens, NY, 11372

Many families, including mine, have been left with no home, no food, no clothes, no personal belongings, no money.

The fire started on a sixth floor apartment and quickly escalated throughout the floor and then eventually reached many other apartments throughout the building.

My family and I are distraught knowing that we can no longer go inside to what used to be known as our home. My parents moved into the building when I was a one year old. Just like many other families, we’ve built so many memories. We were six family members living in that apartment.

Red Cross has provided us with a temporary hotel room, until Tuesday.  We will have to find a place to stay after that.

As we passed by to visit the entrance of the building, we noticed our windows were no longer windows, our ceilings were no longer ceilings.


My little sisters were in the building at the moment of the incident. As they panicked, they left behind our pets. Only one has been found, our pet bunny.

We’re missing our very close friend, our pet Bella. She is a white mixed shitzu, she’s 10, very fragile and small. She likes to hide under beds for protection, she doesn’t like to be carried either. She was last seen with two blue flower shaped dog tag.


My little sisters and I are still in school. My sister Daniela, 12, the youngest has no access to a laptop for any of her classes. Jocelyn, 15, just started her first high school year. And Jennifer (me), I am on my last semester with fear of having to retake courses and not being able to graduate. As we all know, college isn’t easy, especially tuition. I will be having to pay for this semester once again.

Any type of financial help will be extremely appreciated. It will help us continue with our school necessities, clothes, food, and most importantly give us a space to live and rebuild memories.

El 6 de abril de 2021 hubo un incendio en nuestro edificio alrededor de la 1 p.m.

89-07 34 avenue, Queens, NY, 11372

Muchas familias, incluida la mía, se han quedado sin hogar, sin comida, sin ropa, sin pertenencias personales, sin dinero.

El incendio comenzó en un apartamento del sexto piso y rápidamente se intensificó por todo el piso y finalmente llegó a muchos otros apartamentos en todo el edificio.

Mi familia y yo estamos angustiados al saber que ya no podemos entrar a lo que solía ser nuestro hogar. Mis padres se mudaron al edificio cuando yo tenía un año. Al igual que muchas otras familias, hemos creado muchos recuerdos. Éramos seis miembros de la familia viviendo en el apartamento.

Cruz Roja nos ha proporcionado una habitación de hotel temporal, hasta el martes. Tendremos que encontrar un lugar para quedarnos después de eso.

Al pasar para visitar la entrada del edificio, notamos que nuestras ventanas ya no eran ventanas, nuestros techos ya no eran techos.

Mis hermanitas estaban en el edificio en el momento del incidente. Cuando salieron en pánico, dejaron atrás a nuestras mascotas. Solo se ha encontrado uno, nuestro conejito mascota.

Extrañamos a nuestra amiga muy cercana, nuestra mascota Bella. Ella es una shitzu blanca mixta, tiene 10 años, muy frágil y pequeña. Le gusta esconderse debajo de las camas para protegerse, tampoco le gusta que la carguen. Ella fue vista por última vez con dos placas de identificación con forma de flor azul.


Mis hermanitas y yo todavía estamos en la escuela. Mi hermana Daniela, la menor de 12 años, no tiene acceso a una computadora para ninguna de sus clases. Jocelyn, de 15 años, acaba de comenzar su primer año de escuela secundaria. Y Jennifer (yo), estoy en mi último semestre con miedo a tener que volver a tomar cursos y no poder graduarme. Como todos sabemos, la universidad no es fácil, especialmente la matrícula. Tendré que pagar este semestre una vez más.

Cualquier tipo de ayuda económica será muy apreciada. Nos ayudará a continuar con nuestras necesidades escolares, ropa, comida y, lo más importante, nos dará un espacio para vivir y reconstruir recuerdos.
