This is Lani. Lani recently found out that she carries the BRCA2 gene mutation, which means she is at a much greater risk of getting breast and ovarian cancer. The average woman's risk for developing breast cancer is 13%, with the BRCA2 mutation, Lani's is 45-69%. Her risk of developing ovarian cancer is 11-77% versus the average woman's risk of just 1.2%. Lani has decided to have two risk-reducing surgeries; a bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes, and a bilateral mastectomy to remove the breast tissue. I can't imagine what it must be like to decide this. I am very moved by her spirit and her bravery. Here are some words from Lani's Instagram account:
"A few months ago I tested positive for Brca2, and since then my worlds been a rollercoaster of events, doctors appointments, and emotions. Friday my ovaries and tubes come out, then I get to schedule a double mastectomy.
Cheers to being proactive even though I didn’t want to be. Cheers to taking out the pieces and parts that ultimately can kill me. Cheers to the support I have around me. Cheers to moving forward."
Lani will need a lot of help; emotional support, physical support, and financial support. I have created this GoFundMe to try to help with the financial part. If her story touches you, if you feel inclined to help, please donate. If you are unable to donate, please share this GoFundMe on your social media. If you can't do that, say a prayer. Thank you.
