Two weeks ago, Laney woke her family with belly pain, seeming better the next morning but tired. They traveled to Ohio, but her pain worsened, leading to ER visits with inconclusive results, arriving Saturday at midnight.
Laney’s pain subsided, but she’d lost right-leg mobility and had right-arm weakness. At Cleveland Clinic’s main campus, where they stayed nine days, MRIs revealed brain inflammation, suggesting a stroke. Further tests showed neck blood vessel inflammation, causing mini-strokes and her symptoms.
Steroids eliminated Laney’s pain, and she amazed everyone by quickly regaining movement. She’s been brave and strong throughout. However, after being discharged, Laney had another stroke at home within four hours. They returned to the ER, and underwent another round of testing that showed the vessels in her brain are more inflamed than initially thought. The other parts of her brain have been overcompensating for the lack of blood flow.
Laney’s been diagnosed with progressive CNS vasculitis, a rare condition affecting fewer than four kids yearly. Doctors believe it began sometime in the last year. The plan includes chemotherapy for the next six months, frequent testing to monitor progression, and therapies. She’ll be monitored for two years, aiming for remission.
We are wanting to rally behind Laney’s family and support them financially as they face the cost of infusions, medications and treatments over the next 6 months alongside a loss of Danielle’s income as she cares for Laney.
This has been a whirlwind for Laney’s family, but they feel God is with them. They’re grateful for Cleveland Clinic’s amazing doctors and everyone’s prayers for Laney. The road ahead is long and challenging, but they hold onto hope, seeing a light at the end of the tunnel. Thank you for your continued support!
