Who am I, and why I'm fundraising?

Hello! My name is Lakayla Moody, and I was born and raised in Miami, Florida. I am a senior at Florida State University, double majoring in Digital Media Productions and Creative Writing, pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Bachelor of Science with a specialization in the Bachelor of Arts . Ever since I was seven years old, I have wanted to explore the different cultures the world offers. When I turned ten, this goal grew more robust and grew into a love for poetry. Since then, I have been writing poetry, doing spoken word, and finding a passion for reading literature. I even expanded into writing scripts, writing short stories, and creating films. By my senior year of high school, I was well versed in the world of artistic culture and was ready to conquer the world. However, my dream to travel and learn more about art dimmed a bit when my family and I became homeless.

Thanks to many, many people and organizations who believed in me, I was able to attend my dream college. However, dealing with financial issues, staying afloat in classes, and handling bills has been challenging. After three grueling years of homelessness, we finally were able to have a roof over our heads; however, we are still financially depraved. Despite that, I don’t want my financial challenges to hold me back from a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I want to show my family, especially the younger generation, that you can still pave your way to greatness regardless of circumstances or obstacles. That's why I am fundraising today and asking for your help.

 

Why Study Abroad?

I want to study abroad because I want my last semester as a Florida State Seminole to be extraordinary and memorable. I want to fulfill my final requirements for graduation in a place where I can constantly learn and be surrounded by things that can help inspire me in my career. Studying abroad will be able to provide me with an artistic learning experience from people who have an abundance of knowledge with unique techniques who are ready to supply me with education.

Studying abroad will allow me to learn under experts who can provide insight on my career path from a different angle. As a result, I will be able to focus more directly on my career, learn more about the different approaches I can take, and be surrounded by fellow sensualists.

 

Why Florence, Italy?

Florence, Italy, is the heart of art and literature. I want to expand my writing techniques, experience new perspectives, learn how to navigate through career and life challenges, work and build with new peers, and engage with different cultures. Florence, Italy, is filled with art, poetry, literature, architecture, and culture. It is the literal birthplace of the Renaissance. I know I can learn a great deal from this experience and give back to the community and my peers.

This will be an extraordinary opportunity for me to enhance my career and educational goals. I hope I will get the chance to learn more about different people, their life experiences, what their culture means to them, and how to apply my sensual and intellectual learnings to my writings.

 

I aspire to be a professional writer, screenwriter, and filmmakers like Ava DuVernay and Issa Rae. An artist who can evoke emotion and provide a lens of insight from overlooked, unknown, and silenced perspectives. Florence is the perfect place for an aspiring artist like me to be and the place where my career can flourish.
