No parent is ever prepared to hear the words, “Your child has cancer.” Recently, Brittany Schonauer and James Hughes received that devastating news — their youngest daughter, Lainey, has been diagnosed with leukemia.

Lainey, just 2.5 years old is now bravely beginning her fight, receiving specialized care at CHEO. Over the next 2–3 years, she will undergo intensive chemotherapy treatments as she works toward beating this disease. It will be a long road filled with hospital stays, appointments, treatments, and the emotional and physical toll that comes with them.

Brittany and James are devoted parents to two beautiful girls. While they focus on supporting Lainey through every step of this journey, they are also caring for their 6-year-old daughter Renleigh, who is navigating this life-changing moment alongside her little sister. Their priority is — and always will be — their children.

As you can imagine, the financial strain during this time will be significant. Time away from work, travel to and from the hospital, parking, meals, medications, and other unforeseen expenses will quickly add up. We are hoping to ease that burden so Brittany and James can focus fully on what matters most: Lainey’s healing and keeping their family strong.
