Help LaCares Keep His Apartment
The day after Christmas, my friend LD Green got an eviction notice for January 16, 2021. He is currently battling COVID-19 alone at home, and will be without a place to stay in two weeks unless we come through with help.
Meet LDWe met in high school theater in Houston and have been friends ever since. (You may know him as LaCares Green.)
He has a big heart and an even bigger personality. There were 4000+ students in our high school, yet most of us knew his name. Everyone he meets is a friend he just doesn’t know yet.
He has the best memory I know — to this day, he can recite any monologue from any character in any play we did 20+ years ago. (Seriously, he recently performed Fania’s monologue from Playing For Time word for word even through his COVID fever.) And he has the grace enough NOT to use that long memory against all of us who were teenagers together!
He is a theater artist through and through. He trained at DePaul University, and has worked with The Ensemble Theatre in Houston and The Company of Angels in Los Angeles. His passion is performance, and he brings this love to everything he does.
The Backstory
LD lost his full-time job just before the COVID-19 pandemic began, and hasn't been able to find new full-time work since then.
Without the financial luxury of quarantining at home during the pandemic, he has had to go above and beyond to make ends meet by driving for Lyft. His various health conditions mean that he is at higher risk for complications from COVID, yet he has done everything he can to keep hope alive and a roof over his head during a year when unemployment has skyrocketed and new full-time work has not been available.
In November, his digital identity was stolen, giving him another hardship to deal with.
And now, despite taking precautions while still keeping afloat, he has contracted COVID, making any work impossible.
How You Can Help
While Congress is working on new federal relief, LD has an immediate and urgent need that is due before any funding will arrive, leaving LD with no source of income until he is well enough to work again.
Also, Texas’s eviction moratorium ends on December 31st, so LD’s apartment complex will kick him out if he doesn’t come up with $2178.35 by January 16th.
It would be a dream if we could pay his rent until March 1st. Recovery from COVID can be a long process, and it would be a great relief if his housing was secure until he is back to full health.
Financial Details
$2178.35 - LD’s back-rent due immediately
$1909.32 - January and February rent, keeping him current until 3/1/2021
$118.54 - 2.9% GoFundMe platform fee (calculated on the total needed before fees: $4087.67)
$30.00 - GoFundMe's fee of 30 cents per donation (assuming 100 donations)
—
$4,236.21 Total GoFundMe goal amount (rounded down to $4236)
His bank accounts are still frozen because of the identity theft, so I will be collecting the money and sending it to him either via CashApp or by certified check paid directly to his apartment complex. I'll keep full documentation of every transaction and share with any donor who asks!
“Jesus Be A Fence”
Long ago, LD introduced me to one of his favorite expressions: “Jesus be a fence.” If you’re not familiar, it’s a call for Jesus to protect and shield you from the world’s harm. LD’s faith has kept him in good spirits throughout life’s challenges, including the significant ones brought by 2020.
Lately, his prayer has been more plaintive: “Lord, have mercy.”
Whatever your spiritual beliefs, please help me keep my friend safe and sheltered so he can heal and get back to creating his life with the style and enthusiasm we all love so much.
Please share with everyone who knows LD and anyone who can help!
With love and gratitude,
Jennifer
